Social media shorts for NACOA

A series of shorts telling the heartbreaking stories of children of alcoholics

The Challenge

NACOA is a national charity setup which provides information and support for everyone affected by their parent’s drinking. They were looking to produce a series of short films for their social media channels for Addiction Awareness Week, highlighting real, authentic stories about what it’s like to be a child of an alcoholic. The project needed a high degree of sensitivity in helping to tell these stories.

The Approach

Using my Screen Stories process, these films were produced entirely remotely. With my experience as a Listening Volunteer, I interviewed three ambassadors for the charity over Zoom, hearing their heartbreaking stories. I asked the contributors to provide photos and videos which could be used in the film alongside their interviews and they were given a visual treatment.

I delivered for the client 1 x 5 minute film featuring all three interviews, as well as shorter individual films, which were posted on the NACOA social media channels.

The shorts were published on social media for Addiction Awareness Week, and became some of the most-watched reels on the charity’s channel. The posts received many comments from followers, saying the films helped them to think about their own experiences of being a child of an alcoholic.

What The Client Said

“Andy is an especially gifted listener. Coming in fresh to the organisation he quickly understood our purpose and style of communication. He understood our brief as a direct appeal, and ran with the strength of initial pitch. He then had the creative skills and expertise to hugely enhance the original vision and carry the process with calm and enthusiastic professionalism. The efficiency of the method is remarkably effective and allows for very easy hassle-free content capture. What struck me most is Andy’s unique ability to evoke profound emotional responses through film and true life story telling. Each screen moment feels carefully crafted to be something truly meaningful for someone.

His emails are detailed and considered, meaning no time is wasted getting to an outcome. Every time a note or constructive criticism was pointed out, he appears to enjoy correcting things and learning in the process. The final product was of an outstanding quality, delivered on time and any wrinkles quickly ironed out.

Most of all, he’s a friendly and pretension-free character, which helped the process feel easy and straightforward. This service will have a great deal to offer any purpose-driven organisation like ours.”

Powerful stories, authentically told, remotely captured.

I create meaningful fundraising videos called Screen Stories through an online production process, combining interviews recorded over Zoom with compelling edits, to tell stories that need to be heard.
